Hiking Basics

Be Safe

Have Fun

IN THE DESERT IT IS IMPORTANT TO STAY HYDRATED!!

DON'T FORGET TO FILL UP AT THE B-REST STOPS

  • Shoes. Even if it is the middle of summer and 120 degrees outside, don't dare to go hiking in sandals! You should wear high boots that protect your ankles at all times. Boots with thick soles are best, especially if the terrain is rough. I always try to remember my sandals for after the hike. Your feet may appreciate the fresh air after a long hike.
  • Clothing. This is a matter of personal preference. With the drastically changing temperatures in the desert during spring, it is a good idea to layer. There are many lightweight fabrics that are warm but will also wick away sweat. I recommend convertable  hiking pants with legs that zip off.
  • Pack. I don't go on any hike without my daypack. I recommend a pack with at least an 80 oz. bladder. Many packs today are lightweight and have plenty of storage space. Make sure you get a pack that fits your body and is adjusted properly.
  • Food. There will be snacks at each B'rest stop. Even so, I highly recommend keeping snacks in your pack in between stops. That way if you have any trouble on the trail, you will have fuel if you need it.
  • Walking stick. This is one of the neverending debates - a piece of wood or a telescopic pole? I personally prefer a stick I found a while ago - it is more sturdy and offers more support. A telescopic pole is hard to keep adjusting as the terraine changes. You can change your grip on a wooden stick much easier.
  • Other equipment. I always take a map or a book describing the trail with me. You may want to bring a camera, hikers first aid kit, rain poncho (you never know) toilet paper, and plastic bags to dispose of your waste. Even though there are plenty of aid stations, you are going to be hiking for a few miles in between.
  • Please remember to pack out whatever you take in. We want to be welcome back to the park for future hikes.

HIKING HYDRATION TIP Never pass up an opportunity to fill your water containers while hiking. Always start out your hike with a full load of water and don't depend on the availability of water at some future point on the trail -- you may end up disappointed and headed toward dehydration.

You can prevent breast cancer! Now get lets get marching to save some lives!!
